No one can view one of Edward Hopper’s most famous painting without wondering where that scene exists, if not everywhere at one time in a place long ago. One of America’s most iconic realist painters, Hopper was born in Nyack, New York, on July 22, 1882. Nyack, a small town located on the Hudson River, played a formative role in shaping Hopper’s early life and creative vision. He was raised in a comfortable, middle-class family. Both of his parents supported his creative pursuits, but it was his mother provided him with art supplies, illustrated books and magazines for inspiration. His birthplace, now preserved as the Edward Hopper House Museum & Study Center, provides insight into his early years and development as an artist.

Nyack, with its river views and quaint charm, left an strong impression on Hopper. He kept his boyhood home until his death. He had a unique ability to capture the quiet, introspective moments of American life. These observational moments transcended his small town roots.
